Radiation Disaster Issues in Children: A Case-Based Activity

The freely accessible lesson examines three possible cases in a disaster scenario, challenging learners with questions and providing access to useful pediatric radiation resources at key decision making points. The lesson is accredited by a range of agencies for audiences across the spectrum of pediatric healthcare.

As Instructional Designer/Writer for this lesson, my responsibilities included:

• Reorganizing written content in consultation with project management and SMEs.
• Chunking and re-writing content for online presentation + developing downloadable resources for as-needed reference.
• Storyboarding content and writing interactions.
• Coordinating supporting resources.
• Conducting photo image search (paid stock and defense agencies), cropping and treating photos, and managing production artist
• Supporting on-site web developer during course development + quality assurance.

Challenges met for this project included:

• Presenting scenario-based information and associated resources through case-based studies that allowed for easy access by healthcare workers across many disciplines (e.g., first responders, physicians, medical or military personnel).
• Selecting photography relevant and supportive of on-screen case studies, through careful search of stock photography and defense agency sites.
• Providing multiple avenues of navigation through the lesson to support access via desktop and tablet while allowing for compliance with required 508 and SCORM guidelines.
• Working remotely with team and advising an in-house programmer to code course for live launch.

SPEECH PATHways, Inc.

In 2006, bytes & words partnered with founder Kimberly Bell of SPEECH PATHways, a leading Maryland Speech Pathology Clinic, to kickstart marketing for the Clinic’s diverse therapy services and community programs. We first developed a corporate brand and applied it to several affiliated programs and then created a highly visual and user-friendly website, completely rewriting and redeveloping content. We integrated Constant Contact Email Marketing to get the word out about programs, classes and the philanthropic efforts and supported several phases of Facebook graphic redesign.

Through the years we have worked with SPEECH PATHways to focus digital and print marketing — including brochure and exhibit design — to help grow the business into various channels. In 2012, the Clinic moved to a much expanded facility in Westminster, Maryland, securing its place of prominence in the business community and the lives of Maryland kids and families.

The Maryland Therapy Network, Inc.

We built the new website with a simple template backed by the Joomla content management system and pumped up the color/branding to give it visual appeal. The new site highlights its dual mission of working with families and agencies along with placing skilled staff throughout the region.

From creating a user-friendly website, we went on to assist TMTN with its marketing efforts by developing an eye-catching, informative brochure and a tabletop exhibit. bytes & words continues to host the site and provides updates/advice as needed; in 2012 we optimized the site with key terms in partnership with TMTN’s marketing agency.

In 2006, the owner of LIBERATORE’S Ristorante & Catering — a Baltimore area family restaurant  group with 6 locations — approached bytes & words with help for a website that was not functioning. We helped revive the site and provided them a quick graphic makeover (using existing site template code) to help the site  function better as a marketing hub.

Over the years and through the recession, bytes & words has maintained the LIBERATORE’S website and email system, integrated a strong regular email marketing program with Constant Contact, and managed/integrated their official Facebook page. In 2011, we redesigned and expanded the LIBERATORE’S website with a content management system to more dynamically present information for all locations, each with their own menus, events, specials and marketing focus. In 2012 we incorporated OpenTable into their website, Facebook page and email marketing and developed a mobile version of the restaurant site. We continue to work closely with the LIBERATORE’S family and staff across locations to improve their organic search ranking and bring customers to their tables.

In 2008, bytes & words answered a call from the SJCAA to establish the first online presence for this nonprofit association and breathe new life into communications for its 2000+ membership as they prepared to celebrate their Bicentennial Reunion. We clarified branding to convey “200 Years of Women Learners,” explored their archives to develop a site map and engaging content, and designed their first website. With the addition of Constant Contact for ongoing Alumnae e-communications, the site was instrumental in publicizing the momentous 200-year reunion (which we were honored to attend).

In the past 5 years, we’ve worked with a succession of volunteers and management to improve SJCAA communications: Managing the website and email communications, adding/integrating Facebook, and designing the SJCAA’s flagship publication, The Valley Echo, for print and online delivery

In 2012, bytes & words worked with a new Communications Committee and Board to redevelop the website into an expanded, dynamic presence, built on a content management system. The new site — featuring prayer requests, article commenting, online donations and membership payments and photo galleries — has been very well-received. We continue to work with the SJCAA to develop avenues of communication to capture the memories and accomplishments of these women, who range in age from their 50s into the 90s.
